Notes to the Director:
Because of the length of Mutanza, conductors may wish to select two or three variations instead of using the entire piece. If this is done, the composer wishes to have the following procedure adhered to:
1. If all variations are not used, please select a variety of movements (i.e. – Fast, Slow, Fast or Slow, Fast, Slow) such as Var. I, II, & V or I, IV, & V or I, III, IV, V or I, II, III, IV etc.
2. The introduction and first variation must be used without separation.
3. Subsequent variations may be used simply by deleting the notes that tie each variation together.
4. It is important that Var. V be used to conclude the piece as it presents a recapitulation of motivic material from the beginning and also provides a suitable conclusion.
