Heritage of Freedom was commissioned by Rushmore Music Camp on its Twentieth Anniversary, and dedicated to those who have served as teaching staff and counselors and to Paul and Lois Hedge, who founded and directed the camp. The premiere performance was given on August 11, 1990 in the Mount Rushmore Amphitheater with the composer conducting.

Though designed as a patriotic salute to the Presidents honored on Mount Rushmore, “Heritage of Freedom” will also stand on its own as a set of Symphonic Variations for Band (based on the National Hymn “God Of Our Fathers”) without the use of the narration.
